VAADHOO CAVES

Level: Advanced Open Water

Distance from Crossroads Maldives: 20 minutes by dhoni

Similar to Velassaru (Laguna) caves, this dive site is one of the most spectacular cave dive sites in South Male Atoll. This dive site consists of a string of caves along the steep wall of the Vaadhoo Kandu, beginning with one big cave. Inside the cave, you’ll find a ceiling full of colourful corals and schools of squirrelfish. There’s also a long overhang at 30 metres and a narrow cave with a swim-through from 16 to 24 metres.

VELASSARU (LAGUNA) CAVES

Level: Advanced Open Water

Distance from Crossroads Maldives: 30 minutes by dhoni

The caves are directly north of Velassaru with a depth range of 15 to 30 metres. The caves cut into the vertical wall of the reef, causing a jagged appearance, like the edge of a serrated knife. Some of the caves have sandy bottoms and make ideal resting places for stingrays, turtles and nurse sharks. For your safety stop, there are plenty of healthy hard corals to admire on top of the reef at 5 metres.

EMBOODHOO CANYON

Level: Open Water

Distance from Crossroads Maldives: 45 minutes by dhoni

This site looks like a large chunk of rock that fell out of the reef, leaving a vast canyon 50 meters long with caves and overhangs. Divers can begin up current from the canyon and drift into the deep blue water of Vaadhoo Kandu, sometimes among eagle rays, napoleon and sharks, before gliding into the narrow canyon at 20 metres. At a depth of 9 metres, is the top of the rock, but the main reef rises up to 5 metres. On the main reef is a long cave protected from the current and full of marine life. Black snappers and blackjacks are often seen here. If the current is not too strong, it is worth circling the rock at different depths to explore all its features.
